Colbert Not Invited
The South Carolina Democratic Party has decided that Stephen Colbert can't run for President of South Carolina as a Democrat. The party gets to specify the candidates in South Carolina, because it, not the state, runs the primary, according to the Great Richard Winger of Ballot Access News.
I believe the authority for this is in Title 7, Ch. 11 section 20 of the Code of South Carolina.
I have looked in vain for the South Carolina Party Rule that specifies that a candidate who wants ballot access must be a viable candidate and have actively campaigned in the state. (You readers who specialize in Democratic state party committees and who know these kinds of things, should feel free to drop me a note or supply details in the comments. Hint.)
My guess is that it is buried in some party resolution somewhere.
Meanwhile the state Republican primary ballot has 12 candidates! (They are Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, and Fred Thompson; plus Hugh Cort, John Cox, Daniel Gilbert; and Cap Fendig.)
And seats are still available for $35,000.
